The Albury Wodonga Symphony Orchestra (AWSO) is thrilled to announce its launch on the 17th of May, 2025! Once a vibrant part of the region’s cultural landscape from the 1970s to the 1990s, AWSO is making a triumphant return with ‘Portraits’ under the leadership of Artistic Director, Jessie Swan. Audience members will experience the deeply moving orchestral music of Elgar, Brahms and Kats-Chernin, with a world premiere by local young composer William Paffen!
The re-establishment of AWSO has been led by local musicians Jessie Swan, Tara Chambers, and Katie Clarke, and for them the revitalisation of AWSO has been a labour of love. With the support of a dedicated committee, including Graeme Stewart, Catriona Byles, Caoimhe McMillan, and Lisa Bektash, they have poured their energy and passion into building an organisation where exceptional local orchestral musicians can thrive. Together, Jessie, Tara, Katie, the committee, and the orchestra’s musicians are committed to creating opportunities for both performers and audiences to experience the magic of live orchestral music.
“AWSO was a vital part of this community’s cultural identity in decades past,” said Jessie Swan, President and Conductor of AWSO. “It’s an honour to be part of this incredible journey to bring this community orchestra back to life. I’m thrilled to work with such talented musicians and am excited to share inspiring and uplifting performances with our community.”
Establishing a new orchestra is no small feat, and community support is vital to making it a success. You can support the establishment of AWSO and help bring the magic of orchestral music to life in our community by making a donation today – just click the button below.
